Artist’s Statement:
In 2007, I began exploring abstract painting more fully under the guidance of C. Edward Ramsburg. It felt like a natural progression, as all painting is, to some degree, an abstraction. I feel a tremendous joy and freedom in abstract painting. Time stands still, and vast worlds open up when I’m painting--large or small scale. The paintings are often like dreams--half-remembered scenes or incongruous relationships that somehow make sense when placed together, but shouldn’t. Forms dissolve and reappear; both familiar and strange, like emotional echos. Memory, shifting perceptions of reality, the dissolution of form into spirit, and the bond between man and nature have been recurring themes in my work. Although each painting is a personal voyage, my intent is to spark for the viewer that flash of recognition of a time or place or emotional state. The “Ah, this reminds me of ...” moment that triggers their own imaginative riff.
